Quintana Roo

The state of Quintana Roo is located at the eastern part of the Yucatan peninsula. The population is approximately 1.7 million with three quarters of them being under 35 years old. Surrounded by the Caribbean Sea to the north and to the east, and bordering Belize to the south and Guatemala to the West.

Chetumal is the capital. Occupying most of the eastern part of the Yucatan peninsula, the state was, until recently, wild, sparsely settled, and populated almost entirely by the Mayans. In recent years large areas have been cleared for farming and pasture, and the coastal areas have been developed by resorts. It has a hot climate and high rainfall. The economy is dominated by tourism.

 

The resorts of Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen and the “Mayan Riviera” are leading international vacation spots. Along the Caribbean coast the famous Mayan archaeological zone of Tulum as well as the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. The second largest Reef system in the world begins in Cancun and ends at the southern part of Belize making this area great for all ocean enthusiasts.
